Today, the 1st of December, is the first day in my one hundred day challenge. Prior to today I’ve been counting my things and getting ready. I’m still in shock from last night when I found out that I owned 501 things. It’s about 200 -300 more than I thought.
What is crazy is that I have to give away 4 in every 5 items to reach my goal of owning only 100 personal items. What was I thinking!? At the moment it seems unachievable, but I have 100 days and I’m putting my trust in baby steps.
Baby step number one;
The first item I culled is a bit of a cheat, because I actually passed it on a few days ago. But I’m including it because I would never have given it away prior to this challenge. The Lonely Planet Food Guide to Mexico would have stayed on my shelf ‘just in case’.
Instead it went to a new home where it would be used and loved. I gave it to my friend J for his birthday. I still feel super awkward about giving second-hand gifts, I know they say it’s the thought that counts, but some part of it still seems wrong. To make myself feel better I fessed up in the birthday card and said that it was pre-loved. I know he loves Mexican food (even the party was in a Mexican restaurant) so I was pretty sure he’d get a lot of use from it when he moves to San Diego, USA, (as it boarders Mexico) in January. He seemed to really appreciate it and bonus – now I only have 500 things.
